Imagine the sound of one hand clapping

Article Abstract:

It is often very interesting to hear music in unusual juxtapositions, according to pianist Stephen Hough. He is very interested in bringing obscure music to the attention of the general public, and has been a key driving force behind reviving interest in Scharwenka, Hummel and Mompou. He believes that some pieces, including the Scharwenka concerto for which he has recently won an award, need applause as the final bar. If a CD leaves out this applause, then it sounds incomplete.

'I've started, so I'll finish': the true confessions of a serial recording star

Article Abstract:

Hungary still has a rich musical life, even though many talented teachers and students choose to move to the west, according to Hungarian pianist Jeno Jando. He has never gained a strong international reputation, even though he has recorded a very wide range of piano music. He welcomes the opportunity to record music which he rates very highly, and is not concerned about having a high international profile. He is careful to retain his own approach to well-known music.

When the laughing had to start

Article Abstract:

Poet-pianist Alfred Brendel did not plan to begin writing poetry, and was taken very much by surprise when poems began coming into his mind. He feels that his poems have been a route to self-knowledge, indicating to him that he finds the world absurd. He is not interested in the sound of language in itself, but does see parallels between music and poetry, both of which are linear. He also draws parallels between writing poetry and performing music.
