India: where middle-class life is valued, and the poor are another species

Article Abstract:

Many ordinary Indians continue to live in extreme poverty, despite the economic liberalization process that began in 1991. Disasters that befall the poor are dismissed as unimportant, while anything that affects the country's very few wealthy people receives extensive attention. Ties of caste and family are extremely important, while strangers treat each other with a lack of respect that seems very surprising to westerners. This has been reflected in attitudes towards the treatment of women who were selected for research into cervical cancer without being informed that they were acting as human guinea pigs.

The state of the Union

Article Abstract:

The Oxford Union Society, a debating club for students of Oxford University, has been operating since the early 19th century. It has become one of the most famous debating forums in the world, and has the ability to attract key international public figures. However, some observers feel that it has descended into triviality. It has begun debating much less serious issues, and seems to have lost its political and intellectual edge. It is now little more than a social group.
