Learning with London as the classroom

Article Abstract:

Parents who decide to educate their children at home will find that people are often willing to help, according to Leslie Barson, whose two children, aged nine and 15, have never attended school. She is very happy in her role as a home educator, although she initially felt that it would be a very daunting task. She believes that children who are educated at home get the attention they need from their parents, and so do not feel the need to be noisy or demanding. She also feels that children who are educated at home are able to model themselves on the world, rather than just on children of a similar age and background.

A band of forgotten heroes

Article Abstract:

There were eight black footballers playing professionally in the UK between 1884 and 1919, according to Phil Vasili, who began researching this subject because of his interest in ethnicity, class and football. His research started with Arthur Wharton, the first black professional footballer, and also included Walter Tull, the first division's first black outfield player. Vasili's work has attracted considerable interest, and he is currently working with Irvine Walsh on a Channel 4 screenplay of Wharton's life entitled 'Gold Coast Showman.'
