John Major, Leader of the Opposition

Article Abstract:

The recent Queen's Speech contained no really interesting or bold measures, and focused simply on basic party political issues. This shows that the Conservative government has reached a stage where it is unable to move forward any more, and has lost any sense of its own future. It would probably be better for the Conservative party to stop seeing itself as the party of government and to take a new approach, becoming an opposition in office. This is the only way to convince voters that it may not be a good idea to opt for the reformist policies being put forward by the Labour party and the Liberal Democrats.

The smug versus the squeamish

Article Abstract:

As society becomes amoral and undisciplined in the 1990s, the UK political parties lack sufficient authority to change matters. The Conservatives are complacent as they have been in power so long, and the Labour and Liberal Democrats avoid tough decisions to retain voters. Local government reforms in Scotland are an example of Conservative lack of democracy. The Conservative party could resume democratic rule and the opposition could establish respect through leadership and decision-making.

Is it just Emma - or is it really The End?

Article Abstract:

There have been mixed reactions following the defection of Conservative MP Emma Nicholson. Some observers have dismissed her as inconsistent and vain, while she has stated that some Conservative party members are racist and extremely unpleasant. Her defection has reduced the party's majority to only five, and there is a growing feeling that its time in government is now coming to an end.
