Judgement on the Rock

Article Abstract:

There have been very mixed reactions to the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights on the killing of three IRA terrorists by the SAS in Gibraltar in Mar 1988. The UK government has rejected the ruling, but has still agreed to pay almost 40,000 pounds sterling in compensation to the relatives of the victims. Some observers claim that the ruling proves that the government was guilty of murder, while others believe that the government should not have given into to pressure from the European Court of Human Rights. In fact, the ruling vindicated to a large extent the UK government, and its decision showed that it accepted that the victims had set out to murder.

Lightweight friend becomes rock of ages

Article Abstract:

The most important consideration for a portable computer is its weight. If extra modules are necessary before the computer is usable, it will add to the weight. A printer is important for peace of mind over not losing work. The Olivetti Quaderno weighs about 2 lbs and fits into a briefcase. It runs a variety of software and has a 20-megabyte hard disk. The screen has no backlight, so must be used in a good light. Its price in 1992 was 600 pounds sterling.

Roaming with GSM becomes the benchmark

Article Abstract:

There are now more than 10 million users of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) pan-European digital cellular telephone standard worldwide. The European GSM market alone could reach more than 80 million users by the end of the 1990s, with demand being boosted by the expansion of GSM data communications capabilities. The future of the market will be determined by the growing convergence of GSM cellular data and portable computer power.
