Kindly refrain from driving

Article Abstract:

The Quality of Urban Air Review Group (Quarg) reported in 1992 that the increase in the number of vehicles in Britain would offset any decrease in air pollution through catalytic converters and limiting the use of cars. Local councils should monitor air quality to provide data for national environmental consideration. Sheffield has a monitoring network of three automatic 24-hour monitoring stations. Bristol has a fixed network and a mobile laboratory to measure pollutants.

After Rio, painting the town hall green

Article Abstract:

Local authority associations organise plans across districts, counties and metropolitan councils to implement the commitments of Agenda 21, agreed at the Earth Summit in Rio. Contacts with local companies and voluntary associations are important. An overall environmental policy including audit work has been operating in several authorities. Sutton has conducted a traffic audit; Kirklees uses a multi-disciplinary approach and works with the Friends of the Earth.

Too nice to turn people green

Article Abstract:

The Green Party, which began life as PEOPLE in 1973 in Coventry, England, has honest supporters who tell the facts as they perceive them, preventing them from election. They depend on people's responsibility and informed co-operation, but society is not like that in 1993. The Green Party's research is useful for debating the problems. Commerce can be encouraged to adopt environmentally sound practices if they make financial sense.
