K'tut Tantri

Article Abstract:

Journalist Muriel Walker was renamed K'tut Tantri when she settled in Bali in 1932. After her arrival there, she painted and learned about traditional local customs through her links with its royal family. She was involved in opening the first hotel in Kuta, then a very small fishing village on the south coast of Bali, and played a role in the development of Bali's tourist industry in the period before the second world war. She was strongly committed to an independent Indonesia after the war, but by the late 1980s had become a permanent resident of Australia.
