Crisis? What crisis?

Article Abstract:

The current state of the UK film industry is considered. Particular reference is made to director Lewis Gilbert's work on a film version of Shelagh Stephenson's play 'The Memory of Water.' Gilbert indicates that, even with years of experience, it is hard to tell which films will be successful.

Making a movie is tough. Especially if you're the wrong colour

Article Abstract:

The UK film community is not racist, but there is a commercial tendency to overlook issues relevant to ethnic minorities. Some observers believe that the lack of screentime given to Asian film is the result of the narrow vision of filmmakers themselves. The key difficulty is finding a way to present the Asian experience to all cinema-goers without going against or ignoring cultural heritage. However, some progress is being made as Asians make films about whites.

The mouse that ate Western civilisation

Article Abstract:

Disney films were originally aimed specifically at children, even though adults also enjoyed them. In contrast, it now appears that Disney is actively targeting adults, seeking to turn them back into children. This trend seems to have begun with the notion of the theme park, especially the original Disneyland. The theme park ride, which has universal appeal, has now become the model for all cultural pleasures, and Disney films have become to increasingly resemble the mixture of thrill and fear contained in a theme park ride.
