Mexico waits in fear under the volcano

Article Abstract:

Mexican politicians, bankers, intellectuals and journalists are speculating about the likely outcome of the $40 billion loan-guarantee package being put before the US Congress by president Bill Clinton. Some observers believe that, whatever the outcome of this particular deal, Mexico will still face an economic crisis and political uncertainty. Some Mexicans object to the political conditions reportedly imposed by the US on the loan package, and hope to organise a plebiscite on whether the bail-out should be accepted at all.

Mexicans angered by US loan conditions

Article Abstract:

Many Mexicans are suspicious of the motives of US president Bill Clinton in seeking congressional approval of a $40 billion loan guarantee. They believe that US assistance could damage national sovereignty and dignity, and are critical of president Ernesto Zedillo and foreign minister Jose Angel Gurria for accepting the loan. The government has emphasised that oil revenues which will stand as guarantees for the loan will only be used if Mexico fails to meet its payments.

Florida waits for a whisper of an ill wind

Article Abstract:

Residents of the eastern US seaboard and the Caribbean islands are preparing for the first Atlantic hurricane of the 1996 season, which will now run until Nov. Meteorologists expect some very fierce storms in 1996, possibly a reflection of global warming and other climatological changes. However, almost 60% of Florida residents would not be prepared to leave their home if a major hurricane were forecast.
