Ministers move to cut alcohol limit and deter drink-drivers

Article Abstract:

UK government ministers are very keen to cut the number of deaths associated with drink-driving. For this reason, they are considering reducing the blood alcohol limit from the present 80 mg per 100 ml of blood to 50 mg. They are also looking at stricter punishments for high-risk or repeat offenders, including removing the individual's driving licence for life. There may also be stricter drink-driving limits for young people. Motoring organizations do not support tougher drink-driving limits, favouring instead stricter enforcement of existing legislation.

New generation of Black British trendsetters

Article Abstract:

Many observers believed that the magazine 2nd Generation, created in Dec 1996 and aimed at those interested in British Black music and culture, would be unsuccessful. However, this has not been the case. The first issue sold all 15,000 copies printed, while sales of the most recent issue were almost 40,000, bringing in almost 100,000 pounds sterling in sales. 2nd Generation has become extremely fashionable, and has even impressed celebrities such as David Bowie, who agreed to do a photo-shoot and interview.

Why can't Labour be positive about blacks?

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party has made considerable efforts to encourage women to become parliamentary candidates, but has not adopted the same policy towards ethnic minorities. It came under pressure in the 1980s from Black Sections, a group aiming to boost minority representation in the party, but this group eventually dissolved after having made little real progress. The party makes a point of emphasizing its anti-racist stance, but has given little practical help to advancing the cause of black power.
