Mr Cook, we are up in arms

Article Abstract:

A group of women in Liverpool, England, is speaking out against UK arms exports to Indonesia. They have been prompted to take action by reports that British Hawk attack aircraft are being used by Indonesia against large numbers of villagers in East Timor. They point out that the UK is now the largest supplier of arms to Indonesia, which has one of the worst human rights records in the world. They have even gone as far as to enter a British Aerospace factory in Warton, England, and damage a Hawk jet which was to be sent to Indonesia.

Lost in a moral maze

Article Abstract:

Recent moves by the governors of the BBC to take a firmer stand against blasphemy and bad language have been criticised by some observers, who feel that television in the UK is already extensively regulated. They also argue that a few people should not be allowed to dictate what everyone else is allowed to watch. However, others have welcomed the move, pointing to growing violence within society as evidence that violence on television can have a negative impact.

A city fighting for its reputation

Article Abstract:

There are mixed views about whether violent crime is rising in Manchester, England, and about whether perceptions of crime levels are having a negative impact on investment in the city. Problems in infamous inner-city suburbs have died down since the early 1990s as a result of lower unemployment and the wider availability of methadone on prescription. The city's problems today are focused on dance and rave clubs, where ecstasy is now widely traded.
