WORLD: CHALLENGES FOR AIRLINES

Article Abstract:

High levels of regulations affecting national airlines is holding them back from expansion, according to Bob Ayling, the former chief executive of British Airways (BA). Ayling accused governments of keeping control of their flag carriers, instead of allowing them to benefit from the trend towards globalisation. However, he warns that the public will eventually force government to sell state-owned airlines due to reluctance to fund them through taxes. Many airlines are also suffering from the conflict of falling prices and customer demand for improved services.

NETHERLANDS/UK: IMPACT OF BA MERGER WITH KLM?

Article Abstract:

British Airways' (BA) proposed merger with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines would lead to 10,400 job losses across the 62,500-strong workforce of the former, according to Commerzbank transport analyst, Chris Tarry. KLM's workforce could be reduced by 5,800 as a result of the deal, claims the first comprehensive examination of the merger. The study indicates that should BA decide to halt short-haul services from Gatwick, an additional 3,2000 jobs may go. The merger may not go ahead owing to the degree of job losses, while the analysis expressed uncertainty over how the major cost savings would be distributed among the shareholders of the two airlines.
