Never mind the headlines, what's the jacket saying?

Article Abstract:

Male newsreaders generally do not have to be very concerned about their clothing, as long as it is smart and they avoid herringbone patterns and small checks. However, choosing appropriate clothing can be more difficult for female newsreaders. They must ensure that they are not wearing too much jewellery, and must take care not to look too fussily dressed. Most female newsreaders opt for a smart, businesslike appearance. Newsreaders do not receive a clothing budget, and are responsible for the care of their own clothing.

Real cops never had it so good

Article Abstract:

Portrayals of police work in television dramas are generally very inaccurate, but this is not necessarily important. In these dramas, criminals are almost inevitably brought to justice, and the police officers recover stolen property and money. Producers feel that audience levels would fall if the dramas were more in line with the reality of police work. This approach works to the advantage of real police officers, as it shows them to be more effective than they really are.

Out of a synthetic miracle, real joy

Article Abstract:

The invention of nylon in 1937 was to have a considerable impact on the development of the fashion industry. During the second world war, nylon stockings were available on the black market, but after the end of the war, women rushed to buy them legally as more supplies entered the UK. The glamorous designs of the 1940s are currently enjoying a revival, although nylon is also being used in new ways.
