New chief sends out the right signals

Article Abstract:

The appointment by the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RID) of Doug Alker, who is profoundly deaf, to the position of chief executive, reflects the many changes which have been taking place within the organisation over recent years. The organisation is developing with the wider change in attitudes towards deaf people, and aims to become more orientated to users' needs. This is a clear reaction to earlier criticism of charities, accusing them of being patronising to disabled people.

Why the new Chief Justice will say No, Minister

Article Abstract:

Lord Taylor, who has recently resigned as Chief Justice, was the first man in this post to openly challenge the judgment of government ministers. He was reluctant to accept the Home Secretary's right to force judges to impose sentences of a specific length on offenders, for example, and supported moves to have the European Convention on Human Rights incorporated into UK law. The next Chief Justice will also be very likely to avoid unthinking deference to the views of government ministers.

Aid workers' reality check

Article Abstract:

The charity workers who are considering taking legal action against Sally Becker, known as the 'Angel of Mostar,' for allegedly exposing them unnecessarily to danger when delivering aid to refugees in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, seem to be rather misguided. They have overlooked the fact that work of this kind cannot be undertaken without risks. Indeed, some charity workers actively seek out dangerous situations. When undertaking charity work, it is important to retain a sense of perspective.
