Nine lives of a cat woman

Article Abstract:

It is vital to include a great deal of detail and many jokes in children's books, according to Kathleen Hale, author of the popular children's books about Orlando the ginger cat. She has traditionally been mainly seen as an illustrator, but in fact is a talented artist and a skilled caricaturist. Pictures drawn for children tend to be simple, but hers are complex and contain a great deal of movement. She believes that illustrators have always had a low status. She is now 100 years old, and can no longer draw.

Where brevity meets profundity

Article Abstract:

Author Deborah Eisenberg believes that all of her stories deal with discomfort. Their characters tend to be at odds with the universe. Her stories have become more complex, and she acknowledges that she has expanded in layers. She regards this process as part of the pleasure of writing. She likes to feel that her stories are demanding and that they challenge readers' preconceptions about short stories. She has a relatively low profile in the UK, but has gained great critical acclaim in the US.

My book made mothers feel guilty? I wonder why

Article Abstract:

Childcare expert Penelope Leach rejects the view that her 1977 book 'Baby and Child' made working mothers feel guilty. She points out that it was widely read by working mothers, even if they did not agree with her opinions. She has rewritten her book to take account of changing social conditions in the 1990s, but still has a strongly child-centred philosophy. She does not feel that she is preaching to parents, and points out that her book will not provide ready answers to childcare problems.
