Starting over

Article Abstract:

Yoko Ono welcomes the fact that the art and music which she created in the 1960s and 1970s is now beginning to be reappraised. However, she is taking no action to accelerate this process. She is aware that media attention has for many years focused on John Lennon, and points out that both she and Lennon had a very independent side to their nature. Her music was largely dismissed when it was first released, but is now being increasingly regarded as one of the first efforts to combine the avant-garde and pop.

No more Orange Juice...

Article Abstract:

Edwn Collins is a musician who resents following accepted behavior to become successful. He was involved in Orange Juice, a band which became a success in 1983, and sought to hasten the end of the band. He has a hostility to the music industry expressed in 'Hellbent on Compromise', and he seeks to bring about change through his music. He seeks to mix both past and future and sees Britpop as celebrating past times. He argues that he is a genuine outsider, while adolescents do not really seek this role.

There is life beyond Nirvana

Article Abstract:

Some observers have been very dismissive of music group Sonic Youth in recent years, claiming that its members have grown too old. However, 'A Thousand Leaves,' the group's 14th album, is actually extremely good. It is contemplative and poetic, and seems to represent a break with the restrictions under which the group operated in the past. It clearly reflects the group's influences, especially Allen Ginsberg, who was inspiring because of his constant vitality.
