No more karma chameleons, please

Article Abstract:

The Dalai Lama has attracted many followers. However, he is concerned about his fashionable status, and has warned that people brought up in other faiths should not convert to Buddhism. He feels that many people who convert to a religion outside their own heritage only have a superficial commitment to this religion. He does not believe that it is necessary to be religious to be a good person, and has adapted his message to take account of the fact that religion now has only a marginal impact on most people's lives.

Crisis of faith in ad land

Article Abstract:

It has been common in the UK for religious imagery to be used in advertising, but the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is increasingly opposing this approach as more and more people complain about it. The ASA received 699 complaints about 69 advertisements in which religion was perceived to be treated disrespectfully in 1998. The ASA emphasizes that it does not oppose the use of religion in a humorous way, but it feels that it cannot allow advertisers to show no respect at all for religion.

Major's dither cost UK billions, says Lamont

Article Abstract:

Former UK Chancellor John Major became increasingly insecure and indecisive in the run-up to the UK's withdrawal from the European exchange-rate mechanism, according to former Chancellor Lord Lamont of Lerwick in his memoirs. Lord Lamont indicates that Major's indecisiveness on Black Wednesday in Sep 1992 led to the UK losing extremely large sums of money. He states that Major subsequently became very depressed, even though he did not suffer a nervous breakdown.
