The shocking truth

Article Abstract:

Electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) has been used in Europe since the late 1930s, but continues to attract considerable controversy. Some observers believe that ECT is being used too often, with many people being pressured into having ECT and not having the risks fully explained to them. However, others believe that ECT can be a life-saving treatment for some patients, especially those who are so severely depressed that anti-depressant drugs will not act quickly enough. Members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists recognize that ECT is not always administered in the correct way.

A bitter pill to swallow

Article Abstract:

The decision by the UK government in 1995 to publish information indicating that third generation contraceptive pills could bring a slightly increased risk of blood clots led to many women losing confidence in the contraceptive pill, and thus to a significant rise in unintended pregnancies. It now appears that this information was misleading. In fact, the contraceptive pill is very safe, and is a more reliable form of contraception than most others. However, it will take a long time for many women to feel confident about taking the contraceptive pill again.
