Now for the sack race

Article Abstract:

The UK Association of University Teachers is starting to protest strongly about the impact of attempts to reallocate research funding. It points out that staff are under great pressure to achieve high research ratings, as a department's funding will depend on its research performance. This means that less attention is given to teaching and pastoral care, thus having a negative impact on students. This view is also beginning to be shared by the Higher Education Funding Council, which highlights the dangers associated with research being rated more highly than teaching.

Publish, or you could be damned

Article Abstract:

The Research Assessment Exercise, which awards grades to individual university departments, has served to increase pressure on UK academics to have their work published in respected journals. A number of universities are now expressing doubts about retaining members of staff who do not seem to be publishing enough. This problem is being made more acute by the fact that the number of academic journals being launched is falling. Furthermore, academics are increasingly unwilling to review papers produced by their peers.

How to be smarter with the same brain

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common for UK schools to use accelerated learning approaches. These have been shown to have the potential to improve learning capability, and research in the US has indicated that a child's IQ can be improved by up to 30 points. It is an overall approach to education which speeds up the rate of learning for children of all abilities, not just the most intelligent ones.
