UK off-licence retailing has changed. Traditional off-licence are disappearing and specialist stores, supermarkets and home shopping taking their place in the alcohol retail trade. The sector as a whole continues to grow, but specialist stores sales have weakened in comparison to those in other parts of the sector. Supermarkets offer advantages for alcohol purchasers, including convenience and competitive pricing. Alcohol sales as a percentage of total consumer sales decreased from 6.2% to 5.6% between 1990 and 1998, but the industry reports increasing purchases of higher quality products.
