It is widely acknowledged that the US administration has been becoming increasingly frustrated with Israel since the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Centre. The US needs to ensure that the Middle East conflict does not affect Muslim opposition to military action in Afghanistan, so has avoided being forceful with Israel.

Bellicose Russians ambush US defence chief

Article Abstract:

Russian Defence Minister Igor Sergeyev has spoken to US Defense Secretary William Cohen about his concern about US policy on Iraq. He has informed Cohen in strong terms that US policy on Iraq could have a negative impact on relations between the US and Russia. Sergeyev has questioned whether the US believes that its tough stance on Iraq will really play a role in improving world stability and security. His outspokenness was unexpected, and Cohen seemed at a loss as to how to respond.
