Japan's economy still seems strong on the surface, but confidence about its future is now beginning to wane. There are still no signs of a revival in the Tokyo stock market, and many foreign investors are now looking to dramatically reduce their exposure. Japanese banks are coming under renewed pressure, and further problems are being caused by the fact that the country's exports are becoming extremely expensive. Japan's exports are set to fall by 7% in 1997, leading to a cut in output and falling corporate earnings.

It is clear that Japan is experiencing severe economic difficulties, but the Japanese are still rather separated from their recession. Indeed, Tokyo, Japan, still seems to be a materialistic, thriving city. However, it is clear that the Japanese economy will never again be as strong as it used to be, and the Japanese are having to revise their assumptions about their country's place in the world order. Many people do not trust banks any more, and there has been a steady rise in crime, particularly among the young.
