Phone heart-check service to save lives

Article Abstract:

Lifesign initiated the first ever heart monitoring service in Europe on 29 June 1998 in the UK, a move designed to bring about savings in the National Health Service (NHS) and reduce hospital waiting lists. Secretary of State for Wales, Ron Davies, launched the scheme, which is seen as the most important enterprise yet in the use of phone wires to provide health care, known as telemedicine. Patients press a credit card-sized recorder to their hearts for half a minute, placing it under the phone mouthpiece and ringing a freephone number. People fearing possible heart problems can obtain a check-up immediately on ringing the service, with the doctor contacted by the cardiac technician at the other end depending on the seriousness of the results. Lifesign chairman, Ronnie Royston, stressed that the service is not intended as an alternative to a doctor and will help save lives.

The financial information service to Freeserve, UK-iNvest.com, is to launch an online bet-spreading service on its website. IG Index will operate the facility, which will be available in April 2000. Although spread-betting is considered to be one of the riskiest methods of betting, the fact that it is recognised as a tax-free product means it has an important role to play within the investment arena both for small and large clients.
