Public anger heralds changes on Capitol Hill

Article Abstract:

The regular 10-yearly re-districting, the mood of the voters and the resignation of despairing Congressmen is expected to cause the lowest re-election rates in the US Congress since records began. Oklahoma representative Mickey Edwards confessed to wrongdoing at the House Bank. Voters want the number of terms representatives can serve to be limited because they are dissatisfied with the way Congress functions. A Republican White House and Democratic-controlled legislation do not mix.

Republicans likely to hold on to power in Congress

Article Abstract:

The Republican party is now widely expected to retain a majority in the House of Representatives, and may even increase its majority in the Senate. This had not seemed likely until recently, when president Bill Clinton was a very long way ahead in the opinion polls. His lead is now declining, and the Democrats are not thought likely to win a landslide victory. The Democrats have been particularly affected by voters' concerns about political corruption.

Bankrupt Democrats

Article Abstract:

The US Democratic party believes that it has a good chance of performing well in the forthcoming elections. If it does so, the success will come in spite of the many problems within the party. It is facing a conflict between its aims and the reality of how it actually has to operate, and will have to renew itself if Bill Clinton is re-elected as president. Some changes have already taken place, but these have been limited in scope.
