Rip it up, start again

Article Abstract:

Scottish pop music is generally not reflecting significant political developments in Scotland. Developments in Scottish pop music in the 1980s and 1990s have been particularly strongly influenced by record label Postcard, established in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1980 and only in operation for a short time. Recent Scottish pop music still bears traces of Postcard and other influences, but new cultural confidence has made it possible to abandon some sometimes restricting influences.

Fanfare for a new era

Article Abstract:

The musical establishment in Scotland has undergone significant changes in the 1990s. However, there are now signs of an artistic community settling down. Scottish Opera has programmed a strong season of extremely topical new Scottish work to mark the establishment of the Scottish Parliament, while the Scottish Arts Council has created a new post dedicated to the development of orchestra audiences. The main political parties in Scotland lack clear policies about the arts.

Full of eastern promise

Article Abstract:

European jazz is starting to become influential, according to Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko, who is to perform music from his album 'Litania' at the 1999 International Jazz Festival in Glasgow, Scotland. This album is made up of arrangements by Stanko of music by Polish jazz composer Krzysztof Komeda, whom he greatly admires. He feels that the music has the ability to vary according to who is playing it.
