Russia's strong hand still rules

Article Abstract:

Boris Yeltsin, like Mikhail Gorbachev before him, is trying to stop further changes in the Commonwealth of Independent States. At the end of 1991 he put the military into the southern Chechen-Ingush region to stop any breakaway. Now he has argued against the referendum held in Tatarstan which has shown the people favour self-rule inside the Russian federation. This has been interpreted by some as a precursor of a declaration of complete independence from Moscow.

Russia left in the raw

Article Abstract:

Russia, the remaining part of the former Soviet Union, is still not a homogeneous country and therefore faces more uncertainty. Russia is formed of several distinct ethnic and geographic regions, each potentially unstable as the economic crisis deepens. It is possible that the country is less of a cohesive unit than some of its former republics, which leads some western countries to wish for the apparent stability of the former Soviet Union.
