Some women are more equal than others

Article Abstract:

Opportunity 2000 aims to improve the numbers and calibre of women in employment. Nearly half of Civil Service employees are women, but only two hold top posts. The Employment Service Agency and the NHS have set quantifiable targets. The Women's Unit, which established a career register of women earning over 30,000 pounds sterling, provides training. Women comprise 66% of local government employees but only 6% of the top three grades. Eight local authorities are involved in the campaign.

How unions survive in private

Article Abstract:

Trade unions must ensure that they become more attractive to private sector employees and gain the co-operation of management if they are to survive into the 21st century, according to recent research. They should avoid becoming public-sector-only organisations, and need to establish new survival strategies. They are generally looking at the future positively, and are already regrouping and restructuring.
