Speculation mounts over a Shell-Texaco merger
Article Abstract:
US-based oil group, Texaco, and Royal Dutch Shell are the focus of mounting speculation that their proposed European downstream alliance may become an outright merger. Such a move would create the largest oil firm in the world - with a US$ 184bn or so market capitalisation - and are believed to have emerged following British Petroleum's decision to link up with Amoco. Texaco rejected speculation on 28 August 1998 that it is planning a full-blown merger of the second largest oil group worldwide, while Shell noted that the former was one of several companies it was in discussions with concerning downstream activity. Indications are that Texaco and Shell are set to make a formal announcement regarding downstream activity
