Stronger Saddam tests US power in the Middle East
Article Abstract:
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein seems willing to risk an escalation of conflict with the US because he feels that his strength is growing. He is in a strong position domestically, while the US position in the Middle East has weakened slightly. However, the US is determined to retain its dominance in the Middle East, and is very unlikely to be challenged on its Middle East policy by Russia, France or China. It will prove very difficult for Saddam Hussein to break the economic siege of his country.

Secret West Bank settlements put squeeze on Palestinians
Article Abstract:
There are now 350,000 Israelis living in the land conquered by Israel in 1967, of whom 170,000 live in the West Bank and Gaza and the rest in east Jerusalem. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sought to deflect attention from the rise in West Bank settlement activity since he came to power, but it is clear that existing settlements are being expanded. The existence of these settlements will be very effective in ensuring that Israel is able to continue occupying much of the West Bank.
