The cold reality of separation

Article Abstract:

The best solution to the conflict in the Balkans may be to create a group of small nation states with clear ethnic majorities. This is not necessarily a desirable approach, but may be the least bad one against the background of the developments of the 1990s in the region. Creating separate nation states has proved effective in western Europe, and has formed the basis for coming together in the European Union. A similar process has happened more recently in central Europe. However, separating ethnic groups in the Balkans may require methods that would be widely regarded as unacceptable.

The city is attracting much attention from foreign journalists as the 10th anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall arrives, but there is a muted feeling among ordinary Berliners. There is much disillusionment among East Germans, and the city remains psychologically divided.
