The day I went back to the rat race

Article Abstract:

Working at home is often claimed to be the ideal solution to the problems associated with working in an office, such as spending a lot of time travelling and becoming involved in the tensions of office life. However, some people find that they do not have the right temperament for working at home. Those who work at home initially enjoy the peace and the fact that they do not have to deal with unpleasant colleagues. However, they eventually become lonely, and may find that others do not take their career seriously.

Go on - think the unthinkable ...

Article Abstract:

Experiences of using a Lonely Hearts column to find a suitable partner are described. The initial reluctance to admit to needing to find a partner in this way is considered, and the emotions prompted by receiving a large number of replies are discussed. The unnerving process of deciding which potential partners to meet and the resulting experiences are detailed. The way in which using a Lonely Hearts column allows a feeling of control over your life to be established is considered.

So how should a prison governor look?

Article Abstract:

Christine Ellis and Lynne Bowles work as prison governors in male prisons. Promotion is possibe by working one's way up but the need to move round the country to achieve it keeps many women in the lower ranks. Sexual harassment is an occupational hazard but this is the same for male staff in female prisons. Women's presence has improved prisons by removing the macho aspect. Prison staff are trained to be tough, fair and firm.
