The design for living

Article Abstract:

Nicholas McInerny, the playwright, decided to write a play about the founder of the Shaker movement, Ann Lee, although it turned into a play about the life of a Shaker. Ann Lee was a working class woman from Manchester, born in 1736, who was inspired by John Wesley. She thought heaven could be created on earth through good works so she founded the first Shaker community in the new world of America with eight followers in 1776. It grew to 12,000 but is now back to 9000. The celibate, self-contained community follows pre-ordained routines and takes pleasure in things despite austere design.

The rhythm section

Article Abstract:

George Orwell's 'Down and Out in Paris and London' is being staged by three companies using locally recruited extras to be the homeless. The joint production has toured in France and now is touring Britain, finding 50 extras at each location. The extras have little time to rehearse, they are all volunteers, and under Equity rules do not have fixed lines to say. The cast varies according to country and place so that some extras have no drama background, but others may be drama students or in amateur dramatics.

Sex. Booze. Heroin addiction. It's no children's fairy-tale

Article Abstract:

Melvin Burgess's novel 'Junk' is ideal for adaptation for the stage, according to Oxford Stage Company Artistic Director John Retallack. The novel deals with sensitive contemporary issues, and the stage is an ideal forum for these to be discussed. It is set in the early 1980s, but remains extremely contemporary. Retallack tried to keep the staging as romantic and carefree as possible for as long as possible, as the story becomes very serious in the second half.
