The game's up in California

Article Abstract:

The most populous state, California, has been ignored in the 1992 presidential election campaign. Since 1990 700,000 jobs have disappeared and one in ten is unemployed. The housing market has collapsed. Californians blame President Bush and Republican support was so bad that he was advised to avoid the state. Nineteen women are standing for the state's 52 seats in the House of Representatives. Democratic registrations outnumber Republicans by two to one. Californian Republican governor Pete Wilson is unpopular.

Boris smoothes path to run-off

Article Abstract:

Russian president Boris Yeltsin is regarded as having done very well to obtain a lead of just over 2% over Gennady Zyuganov, head of a Communist-nationalist coalition, in the first round of the presidential election. He is aware that he must now work very hard to ensure that he is victorious in the second round, and is taking care not to appear complacent. He must in particular boost the turnout and reach and agreement with the non-Communist candidates who will not be standing in the second round.

Jittery Yeltsin stunned by poor turn-out

Article Abstract:

It appears that Russian president Boris Yeltsin has gained victory over Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov, his main rival, in the first round of the presidential election. This will place him in a strong position for the run-off in Jul 1996. Yeltsin's high-profile campaigning seems to have reaped benefits, although the low turn-out was disappointing. At one stage, Yeltsin's campaign team felt it necessary to make an urgent appeal to people to make the effort to vote.
