The next Damien Hirst - at 50?

Article Abstract:

Many art schools in the UK admit large numbers of 'mature' students every year, indicating that many people wish to fulfill an ambition to be successful in the arts, even quite late in life. However, these people often have mixed achievements. In some cases, their very determination can work against them, as they are unwilling to take advice. In other cases, a negative reaction from peers can prove very damaging. People who begin writing in later life may be more successful than those who take up an artistic pursuit.

Death, passion and contradition, by Bowie and Hirst

Article Abstract:

Installation art can never be adequately described in writing, and must be seen at first hand in order to be fully appreciated, according to Damien Hirst, who has attracted considerable controversy with many of his pieces. The most important thing is that a work of art is attractive, and it need not necessarily have a strong intellectual content. He has no social conscience when working, and is not concerned with how his work is interpreted by the audience.
