The promiscuous parasite in party mood

Article Abstract:

Mistletoe once grew extensively in the apple-growing areas of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. The disappearance of traditional apple orchards has led to a significant decline in the growth of mistletoe in this environment. Mistletoe is strongly parasitic, however, and it appears that there is no overall threat to mistletoe in the UK. The demand for mistletoe in the pre-Christmas period has been partly met by supplies from France for many years, but there are indications that this may not happen in 1997.

Don't misjudge Europe's real mood

Article Abstract:

There is a generally dismissive attitude towards European monetary union (EMU) in the UK, with politicians giving the impression that the deadline for EMU is no longer important. This approach, which only takes into account the interests of the UK, is a very dangerous one to adopt. It is important to continue to take EMU very seriously, looking closely at all signs which come from Europe, not just those which fit in with the present mood.

Standards are slipping, but the real problem is literacy

Article Abstract:

Examinations have changed significantly over the years. The English Literature GCSE requires students to study two plays one by Shakespeare and a contemporary work; and a variety of poetry from different centuries, cultures and traditions. Studying Chaucer is no longer required and course work is counted towards final marks. Despite growing concerns over student literacy, such skills are neglected in subjects other than English.
