The spy who loved both sides

Article Abstract:

Vietnamese journalist Pham Xuan An reported on the Vietnam war for Reuters and for Time magazine. He came to public attention as the only local reporter to be used by a US publication, but it was not until many years after the war that it became known that he also fed information to the Communist strategists of the Vietcong. Senior US journalists, some of whom were personally acquainted with An, do not really feel any bitterness towards him, even though his actions may have caused the deaths of some US advisors to South Korea. They understand that many people had complex loyalties at that time.

Hawaiians take first step to reclaim native paradise

Article Abstract:

State officials in Hawaii are shortly to announce the results of a postal referendum held earlier in summer 1996 among native Hawaiians on the issue of taking steps towards sovereign self-rule. It is expected that the vote will be in favour of such a development, and this will spark off a process which could lead eventually to Hawaii becoming autonomous from the US. There has been growing pressure for some time for the revival of Hawaiian culture and for compensation from the US for its actions in Hawaii.
