Therapists - who needs them?

Article Abstract:

Psychotherapy has paid very little attention to scientific research, and is therefore largely ineffective in explaining why certain people behave as they do, according to Professor Robyn Dawes, head of psychology at the University of Oregon. He believes that psychotherapy can be valuable because it allows people to talk about their feelings, but points out that professional psychotherapists are no more effective than non-professionals in resolving people's psychological problems. Research indicates that psychotherapists are generally not very good at predicting people's behaviour.

Recovery syndrome

Article Abstract:

People who have undergone therapy and had the experience of recovering a memory of childhood abuse which had been hidden deep in their consciousness are generally believed. Most observers feel that there must be some element of truth in 'remembered' childhood abuse, and have not questioned the claims any further. However, there are in fact many cases in which recovered memories are in fact incorrect. Some observers feel that therapists use techniques which can combine to produce almost any kind of material.

Homework tips for wired-up families

Article Abstract:

Computer software can be a valuable tool in helping schoolchildren with their homework. However, obtaining appropriate information can be a frustrating task. It is worth investing in Encarta, the Microsoft encyclopaedia, on CD-Rom, which is highly praised by information technology experts. However, children must also be able to show that they have gone beyond Encarta. The quality of other software can vary considerably.
