UK: TELECOMS INDUSTRY OPPOSE RADIO LINKS AUCTION

Article Abstract:

The government is being asked by the telecom industry not to have another expensive auction when it sells licences for radio links to the Internet. The Federation of the Electronics Industry wrote to the Radiocommunications Agency saying it couldn't afford another wireless auction. The government prefers auctioning broadband fixed wireless networks licences. However, the current auction of third generation mobile phones licences has seen costs soar to GB[pound] 14.3bn.

Why the Internet means a bright future for our cities

Article Abstract:

The Internet has been seen as a way for people to work in rural areas, but it is likely to be linked to a greater concentration of work in major cities. Computers and telecommunications complement face-to-face interaction rather than replacing it. This could help the development of cities in the United Kingdom outside London. The UK has a high concentration of government and population in London, in contrast to the US and other European countries such as France.

Sally Tate

Article Abstract:

Domain names are the form of organization of internet addresses to organizations, and the system of domain names is scheduled to change on April 1 1998. No replacement system has been agreed on and this could lead the Internet to cease to function. Competition for names has led to legal action. There are a number of issues relating to Internet governance that have to be tackled, and there is a need for more accountability over self governance.
