When will Paddy's party realise it does agree with Tony Blair?

Article Abstract:

The UK Liberal Democrats seem determined to create a separate identity, even though a large part of what made up their core programme has been enacted by the Labour government. This determination is the reason why the Liberal Democrats will vote against the 1998 Queen's Speech, even though it contains nothing to which they can really object. It seems that the Liberal Democrats have now fallen into the trap of opposition for opposition's sake, even though there is little or nothing in the policies of Prime Minister Tony Blair that would cause problems for a modern liberal.

The only debates worth having occur outside party conferences

Article Abstract:

Debates at the annual conferences of the UK's political parties are often meaningless and self-interested. It is widely acknowledged that strong political debate would bring benefits, but annual conferences are clearly not the appropriate forum for such debate. This has been demonstrated at the recent 1998 annual conference of the Labour party, where speakers were guilty of contradiction and failing to present viable economic strategy.
