Willie Hamilton

Article Abstract:

Teacher and politician Willie Hamilton gained a degree from Sheffield University, England, before serving in the Army during the second world war. He became Labour MP for West Fife, Scotland, in 1950, retaining this post until 1974 and then becoming MP for Fife Central until 1987. He became well-known for his strongly anti-royalist views. He held a range of posts, including being Vice-Chmn of the Parliamentary Labour Party between 1966 and 1970.

William Hilton

Article Abstract:

Politician and industrialist William Hilton began his working life as a fireman on the railways. He became Labour party agent to the late Lord Kirkwood, and in 1952 was appointed Trade Union Research Officer with the National Federation of Building Trades Operatives. He stood for East Hertfordshire in 1955 and North Ealing in 1959. He won Bethnal Green in 1966, and retained this seat in 1970. He wrote several seminal books, including 'Building By Direct Labour,' published in 1954.

Lord Oram

Article Abstract:

Teacher and politician Albert Oram studied Geography at the London School of Economics. He became a school teacher in Reading, England, but during the second world war declared himself a conscientious objector and became a market gardener and then a hospital porter. He later enlisted in the Royal Artillery as a private soldier. He became research offer of the Co-operative Movement, and in 1955 was nominated MP of East Ham South. He played a key role in the success of the Overseas Development Administration.
