Cherie and the all-stars

Article Abstract:

Cherie Booth, wife of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, is one of 22 barristers who have set up Matrix Chambers. The creation of a new chambers has attracted considerable publicity, but can be seen simply as a reflection of the way the Bar is having to adjust to changes. Barristers no longer remain in the same set throughout their career, and mergers are becoming more frequent. The 17 junior barristers and five silks who will be the initial members of Matrix Chambers will specialize in human rights and civil liberties cases.

Women in law: a brave new era begins

Article Abstract:

Gaining entry to the English Bar was very challenging, according to new Association of Women Barristers Chairwoman Helene Pines Richman. She feels that being an American placed her at a disadvantage, although this was not expressed openly. She feels that she has adopted a more polite approach in her work in order to comply with English practice, but does not allow this to have a negative impact on her clients. In her new role, she aims to have an impact on a wide range of issues relating to women.
