Zeneca shares soar on back of merger rumours

Article Abstract:

Sweden based drugs company, Astra, has announced that it is interested in acquiring the remaining 50% of its joint sales venture with US based Merck. It is thought that Astra may pay up to US$ 15bn to acquire the remaining share in the joint venture with payments being linked to future drug sales over the next few years. The restructuring of its sales venture will allow the company to possibly link up with another US based pharmaceuticals group, and speculation is already growing as to a possible link up with Zeneca or Schering Plough.
