A stubborn amoeba takes center stage

Article Abstract:

Mexico is the world's largest center for the study of E. histolytica, which causes the diarrheal disease Amebiasis. The government's commitment to the study of the disease is due to the high rate of the disease in Mexico. About 8.4% of the Mexican population has been infected.

IOM issues vaccine report

Article Abstract:

A report issued by the IOM recommends the establishment of a National Vaccine Authority to coordinate the cost-effective development of needed vaccines. Legislative action on the proposal, which has an estimated cost of $55 to $75 million per year, is doubtful in 1993.

Share and share alike isn't always the rule in science

Article Abstract:

Researchers are increasingly choosing not to share materials such as knockout mice. The trend is fueled by increasing costs and competition, stronger ties between academia and industry and a lack of enforcement among bodies such as the National Research Council.
