Ammonia removal processes for urine in an upflow macrophyte system

Article Abstract:

Bacterial nitrification and denitrification may not be as important in nitrogen removal from wastewater in a wetland environment as plant uptake of nitrogen. An upflow macrophyte system was constructed to mimic the conditions present in a constructed wetland. In such a system, it was observed that plant uptake of ammonia helped to regulate the oxygen levels present in the system, enabling bacterial nitrification to proceed simultaneously.
