Base isolation gets its day in court

Article Abstract:

The friction-pendulum base-isolation system was used in the seismic retrofit and sealing of cracks in partition walls, exterior masonry, floors and ceilings of the US Court of Appeals and Post Office Building, which sustained major structural damages in the 1989 earthquake in San Francisco, CA. A wide-range of isolator bearings were tested for quality before they were used. Full-scale computer analysis was performed to give a face-lift to this Beaux Art-style structure.
