California engineer finds new fault near the San Andreas

Article Abstract:

Senior engineer Scott Kieffer of Jacobs Associates has discovered a new fault trace south of the San Andreas Fault in Daly City, CA. He noticed an exposed fault zone in the sea cliffs at Mussel Rock while doing reconnaissance mapping in the area in Oct 1998. Kieffer called the United States Geological Survey (USGS) when geological maps showed no evidence of the fracture. The fault, called Mussel Rock Fault, is located 1,600 ft south of the San Andreas Fault and moved fairly recently according to USGS geologist Russell Graymer.

Hot views of the microscopic world

Article Abstract:

The dynamics of crystal growth can be studied with accuracy using a heater made of electroconductive glass. The heater, invented by amateur scientist Ely Silk, allows users to create their own images of crystals. The procedures for designing the heater are presented.
