Navigating the new workplace

Article Abstract:

Employers regard basic academic skills as essential for the future, but unfortunately lacking in current workers. This is followed by workplace competencies, such as the ability to work in groups. While technology and global competition have increased the demand for skilled workers, schools need to keep up with changes in the workplace. Since employers are now paying a premium on recruiting college graduates, young Americans need to be well-educated and skilled to find good jobs. Suggestions for policy makers and educators are given.

TelSys is a computer tool for assessing the seismic resistance of telecommunications systems. It uses a geographic information system to simulate the interactions of lifelines, and their effects on telecommunication and network management. TelSys is made up of different modules describing soil properties, geological faults, earthquake impacts, and lifeline models. Estimates of damage to telecommunication lifelines is represented by failure probability and service loss of the links.

Ball kills fire with fog

Article Abstract:

Research into ways of suppressing fires is discussed. An innovative device, developed by a small UK company, generates a dense water fog at low pressure and can also mark intruders with an indelible fluorescent spray.
