Competitive interactions among components of humic acids in granular activated carbon adsorption systems: effects of solution chemistry

Article Abstract:

Competitive interactions among humic components were examined to investigate the adsorption by activated carbon of a humic acid extracted from Laurentian soil and the synthetic polymer polystyrene sulfonate. Changes in molecular weight distributions of molecules remaining in solution after adsorption were measured to study these competitive interactions. It was found that molecular size distribution in relation to adsorbent pore sizes largely controlled the adsorption of humic substances. The extent of adsorption is shown to increase with increasing ionic strength and calcium content.

Adsorption of natural organic polyelectrolytes by activated carbon: a size-exclusion chromatography study

Article Abstract:

Size-exclusion chromatography is used to study the adsorption by activated carbon of whole humic acid and size fractions isolated by ultrafiltration. It was found from isotherms of individual ultrafiltration size fractions that smaller molecular size components adsorb to a greater extent on an adsorbent mass basis. Preferential adsorption of small molecular size components, wherein adsorptive fractionation occurs on the basis of molecular size, was confirmed by a comparison of molecular weight distributions.

Site energy distribution analysis of preloaded adsorbents

Article Abstract:

A new method for determining site energy distributions from isotherm parameters is presented. The new technique may be useful for increasing the knowledge on sorbent preloading at a fundamental level. It accounts for changes in the numbers, diversity and average energy of surface sites. The new method is demonstrated using activated carbon but it is shown that the technique can generally be used for other heterogeneous adsorbents in natural and engineered systems.
