Cutting edge

Article Abstract:

Several companies will exhibit new tooling inserts at the 1998 MACH exhibit. Teledyne Advanced Materials features multi-layer coated carbide inserts whose structure of intermediate-coated layers have been changed during the vapor deposition process to enhance coating adhesion. Stellram also presents two ISO negative turning inserts. Grade NL25 is a wear-resistant general purpose insert designed for various applications on cast iron and steel. Grade NL92 is built to withstand the effects of interrupted cutting and the machining of high nickel or stainless alloy steels.

Uniform approach

Article Abstract:

The Big Three automobile manufacturers have initiated the establishment of QS9000, a new quality standard which is geared particularly for the automobile industry. Car manufacturers have realized that the ISO9000 is insufficient for their purposes. The initiative provides strict quality requirements in areas such as quality systems, advanced product quality planning and control plans, failure mode and effects analysis, production part approval processes, measurement system analysis, and quality system assessment.

Car concepts

Article Abstract:

The vehicle layout system (VLS) of the Integrated Car Engineer by Concentra Corp. enables the initial concept designing in a short time. VLS divides car designing into the areas of body style, powertrain, suspension, occupancy and ground line analysis. To overcome design clashes among various vehicle parts, VLS allows fast design changes and shows the implications for the rest of the design. Problems in designing due to legal constraints are discussed.
