DOE gives $47 million for core research

Article Abstract:

DOE funded its Environmental Management Science Program in Aug 1996 with 139 grants for basic research to be conducted at universities and government laboratories. DOE hopes the 3-year grants, ranging from $200,000 to $2.9 million, will engage the best scientists in solving environmental problems.

Article Abstract:

Research by Steven Arnold, John McLachlan and others that indicates that pesticides may combine in the air to produce a estrogen-like substance that may cause infertility in men and some sorts of cancer has incited debate. The chemicals include dieldrin, endosulfan, toxaphene and clordane.

Green grass, cool climate?

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that added nitrogen in a grassland ecosystem spurs the growth of weeds rather than native plants. In the long term this decreases climate benefits because the invasive species are less efficient at removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
